STORIES OF SEA AND CULTURE WELCOME TO TRAPANI

The extreme tip of western Sicily from the salt pans to the fortress of Erice

Below the promontory of Mount Erice, located between the Tyrrhenian sea and the Strait of Sicily, is Trapani, known as the city of two seas, a place rich in natural beauty and architectural works giving it an elegant air. The views of Trapani enchant tourists: from the Egadi islands to Erice and up to Marsala. A must is the picturesque, fishing harbour always teeming with people, their voices and the sounds of a typical harbour setting. From here you can see the Torre della Colombaia, symbol of the city of Trapani, positioned in the middle of the sea.

Trapani is famous for its characteristic, old town resembling a maze of narrow streets and alleys looked over by ancient buildings, mostly in Sicilian Baroque style, it is also famous for its more than one hundred churches. Among the many religious buildings, the Basilica Sanctuary of Maria Santissima Annunziata (known as the Madonna of Trapani) and the Cathedral of San Lorenzo where the famous canvas by the Flemish painter Van Dick, dedicated to the crucifixion of Christ, is kept.

A visit to the Pepoli Museum will allow you to appreciate one of the most precious gifts of the Sicilian sea: coral, worked with different techniques by Trapani master craftsmen. Today coral fishing is no longer allowed but the tradition continues to enchant generations of people.

A STROLL AROUND BEAUTIFUL ERICE

If in Trapani, take advantage of the cable car ride up to Erice, rising on top of a mountain, 700 metres above sea level. The beauty of the medieval village is difficult to describe and its atmosphere is unique.

Its imposing city walls (the Cyclopean walls), its spectacular panorama, its cobbled streets and its small houses and colourful crafts shops all help to create a magical and exciting moment in Erice.

A visit to Erice for our guests of the hotel Sopra le Mura in Castellammare del Golfo will certainly make their trip to Sicily an even more memorable one.
